Game 1 v Wilmington
13-11

This is the new Wilmington club team comprising mostly current UNC-W and NC State college players (with a few UNC-W alums in the mix). Though the team itself seems to be a break from the old guard, they still play Wilmington ultimate - hard-nosed and scrappy. In particular Wilmington used its trademarked heads-up/poachy defense that gave Los headaches in the early goings of the game. This game was tight throughout but Los eventually pulled away for a 13-11 win. Without a doubt, the Los/Wilmington series will be one to watch throughout the season.

Game 2 v Greenman
13-10

This was a match-up of two North Carolina teams very familiar with one another. Greenman came with a strong offensive game-plan, utilizing break-side throws to great effect and minimizing their own offensive turnovers. This game highlighted a trend for this weekend - Los was a little too slow to adapt defensively to a number of their opponents' gameplans. Of course, this is what early season tournaments are for - getting players in sync with one another and developing as a team. However, by the end of the game Los' defense steps it up to snag some breaks.

Game 3 v Charlotte Masters
13-4

This is a new NC masters team helmed by Ed Fox. Definitely a solid team that has a very strong base of players. The first 6 points of this game were on serve until Los was able to use its younger legs to pull away for the win in the wilting heat.

Game 4 v MadCow
13-14

The last match-up between these two teams was a 15-2 win by Madcow at the 2006 Furniture City Shootout. Two years later the match was much tighter between two similar teams. Los starts out strong on defense and takes half 7-5. But Madcow doesn't disappear and they battle back to take the lead 12-11. Los evens it up at 12s, forcing overtime. Each team scores on their next offensive possession and Madcow receives the pull on double-game point. They work it all the way down the field, but the potential game-winning score is called back. Two passes later Madcow turns the disc on a swing pass. Los immediately picks the disc up and works it downfield with a couple of mid-ranged shots. However, the final 30 yard shot ends up being a miscommunication between the thrower and receiver and the disc falls harmlessly in the endzone. Madcow gets the disc back and their next shot to the endzone ends in a foul/contest - disc back to the thrower. A few passes later Madcow launches a high arcing hammer into the endzone. Two 'Cow receivers and one Los defender converge - throw incomplete. But another receiving foul sends the disc back to the thrower. Third time's the charm and MadCow puts it in for the win. It was a heated game at times - but overall an excellent competitive July match.

Quarterfinals v El Diablo
15-12

Los' second place finish in their pool set up an 8:30 AM first round match against El Diablo a SC/GA combo team. The game was tight early on and El Diablo went up a break on the strength of several athletic deep grabs. After half Los racheted up its deep pressure and forced some in-cut turns, then closed out the game with steady offense.

Semifinals v Ring of Fire
10-15

This game started poorly for Los - Ring of Fire broke four consecutive times before Los was able to get on the board at 1-4. Los managed to close the gap a bit at 3-5 with a chance to break again, but Ring forced the turn and punched it in for the score. The game was hotly contested for the remainder of the match, but Los was unable get within striking distance and Ring won a berth in the finals 15-10.
